API (Application Programming Interface)

Most VoIP providers use multiple softwares to manage their operations (website, accounting software, CRM, ERP, or mobile dialers) in parallel with the softswitch. Quite often there is a need for programs to interact with each other by importing or exporting information or triggering a certain action after specific conditions are met. In such cases, providers seek an integration of all elements and automation of the overall system by using API.

API is a set of routines to manage a system to integrate with another piece of software. This method allows you to insert or retrieve data from the database securely and to control the process of a specific action. All the processes run in the background and are invisible to end-users. One of the most common examples is an online purchase. Online stores allow users to enter credit card information, which is then stored and sent to a remote application using the API to verify whether the information that the user entered is correct.

When choosing a softswitch, find out if it has an open API that is usually published by the vendor and can be used freely for integration with third party software. API is one of the most popular integration methods, but systems may support additional ways, such as MySQL scripts or a special development kit.
